I've been thrilled to hear how so many of you loved my Kid's T-Shirt Tote Tutorial! And what great interpretations you've come up with: tank tops, maternity tees...my reader's are so creative! Glad to hear everyone's breathing a little new life into their old tops!
A couple of you were wondering what you might be able to do with the sleeves that are removed from the t-shirt for this project. Here is a little idea I had that topped my daughter's head this Fourth of July!
What you'll need...
2 cut-off t-shirt sleeves, about 6" of 1/4" wide elastic, scissors,safety pin
1. Remove the sleeves from a t-shirt, just before the seam line. Cut apart at the small seam. You should have something that looks like this...
2. Lay these pieces together, right sides facing, and stitch up one of the small sides.
3. Unfold and the sleeves and lay flat.
4. Fold the top (finished edge) down to where it meets the bottom of the seam you created and pin.
5. Using a small seam allowance, sew along the finished edge. This creates a channel for the elastic to go through.
6. Use a safety pin to help you feed the elastic through the channel.
7. Sew a short seam at the top to anchor the elastic into place.
8. Gather the fabric to your desired scrunchie size. Fold the scruchie in half, right sides facing and sew over your previous elastic anchor seam, sewing through all layers this time.
9. Cut the elastic tails off. You should have something that looks like this...
10. Use your scissors to cut little streamers into the fabric, every 1/4" or so, being careful not to cut into the seam.
Now, if you can just get your daughter to sit still enough to put it in...
This is a perfect example of why you should never throw fabric scraps away! You never know what use you may find for them!
